UGC NET is the National Eligibility Test conducted by the University Grants Commission for the allocation of research grants and junior assistant professorship and is conducted twice a year, usually in February and October. Usually, people write NET after completing their Masters, and a Master's Degree is actually mandatory for you to avail of the benefits after qualifying. I, however, attempted the exam at the advice of my father, who is an English professor. I applied via the UGC website and filled in the appropriate details to get the hall ticket. NET consists of 2 sections which include common aptitude questions and core subject questions. I was quite happy at the thought of the paper being in MCQ mode, however on seeing the paper, it broke my heart as it was very hard and could only be answered by someone who knew their subjects like the back of their hand! I was also anxious about the fact that I had to sit with strangers as NET is conducted at the appropriate centres and they provide you with computers in which you just have to log in and answer. I was also scared about time management as you would feel there is a lot of time, especially with the answers being MCQ, yet no one realises until you have one hour left and more than half the paper to complete.

My experience of writing the NET was pretty appalling because of my lack of preparation but I know of my cousin who prepared for 2 years and qualified for both the research grant as well as the junior assistant professorship. If you are really keen on qualifying, you can get admissions for NET coaching as well as learn by yourself. I would advise you to learn with a friend or someone else who is taking the exam as it increases your competitiveness, which is essential for such an exam!

I hope this post kindles your wish to write the NET and I wish you all the best and hope you qualify with both the rewards!

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has entrusted the National Testing Agency (NTA) with the task of conducting UGC-NET, which is a Test to determine Indian nationals' eligibility for 'Assistant Professor' as well as 'Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor' in Indian Universities and Colleges. The National Testing Agency (NTA) began administering the UGC-NET in Computer Based Test (CBT) format in December 2018. The award of a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or eligibility for an Assistant Professorship is based on the candidate's overall performance in UGC-NET Papers I and II. The candidates qualifying only for Assistant Professorship are not eligible to be considered for the award of JRF. Candidates who pass the eligibility exam for Assistant Professorships are subject to the norms and regulations of the respective universities/colleges/state governments for the recruitment of Assistant Professors. Every year, UGC-NET is held twice. (June & December). Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the UGC NET cycles were consolidated and performed concurrently.

To regularise the UGC-NET examination cycle, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting UGC NET December 2022 in the month of February & March 2023 in 83 topics, in chosen locations across the country, with the approval of UGC.
