You can appear for NEET for the BVSc (Bachelor in Veterinary Science) course, which is a 5-1/2 years degree course. There are other entrance exam options available, which are university or state-level veterinary entrance exams. There are agriculture universities that conduct their own entrance exam for admission to BVSc degree courses.

NEET is the best option because it is accepted all over India and if you have a good NEET score you have a good chance of getting admission at a good college. Some of the entrance exams which you can appear for other than NEET are

1. KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test),
2. GB Pant University of Agricultural Technology
3. Assam Agricultural University entrance exam
4. Rajasthan Pre University Veterinary Test
5. Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology entrance exam.

Eligibility Criteria:

You need class 12th qualification with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with aggregate 50% marks to become eligible for these entrance exams. There are many options if we look at several universities and states in our country. Almost all states have an agriculture University and most of them offer veterinary degree courses.

As we know India is an agricultural-based economy and cows and other livestock require regular health checkups. Veterinary science has a lot of scope in our country with a number of dairy farms, poultry farms, etc to cater for the needs of a big population. There are about 137 veterinary science colleges in India and you have many options other than NEET. The entrance exam is mandatory for admission because there are a limited number of seats and students are given admission based on merit. So, it will be better to appear for the entrance exam and get a good score. You can aim for state quota admission if you don't want to appear for NEET. Just appear for the state level entrance exams.

Yes, an aspirant needs to qualify NEET test conducted by NTA to get admission to the veterinary science courses. The candidate has to secure a minimum mark of 135 if he belongs to a general category. That is, for a general-category student seeking admission in 2024, his marks must lie between 135 and 720. For SC, ST and OBC candidates, it will vary between 163 marks and 129 marks out of total marks of 720 for the said test. The minimum score is variable from one institute to the other. NEET is the only route for a candidate to be inducted into the Veterinary Doctor Course for filling up seats in the recognised Veterinary Colleges under 15% All India Quota. The student should go through the admission - brochure of NEET conducted by NTA to asses his eligibility criteria.

About the course-
The duration of BVSC is 5-1/2 years including the compulsory internship. Further, a student needs to complete a rotary internship programme to be eligible for registration with the Veterinary Council.

Other courses such as the Diploma in Animal Husbandry and a Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy after 12th with a science stream are possible in India without appearing for the NEET examination.
