Fortunately for me, my parental home in Saltlake, Kolkata is close to the National University of Juridical Sciences, or NUJS as they popularly call this premier institution in the field of legal education. Our home is also close to three other landmark educational institutions in the vicinity - The Jadavpur University Saltlake campus, College of Leather Technology and NIFT Kolkata.

Located adjacent to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, an important road that connects Saltlake with the rest of Kolkata, the NUJS campus is a majestic one. Spread over five acres of prime land, it has all the facilities a modern institution would require to function effectively. It has an impressive administrative block, separate hostels for boys and girls, an auditorium, a library, a gymnasium and a lot more. Even though we lived close by and often walked past the institute, never really got the opportunity to venture inside the campus. During those times, with no clue, would often wonder about the kind of courses the institute offered. It was only later, when one of our known acquaintances got admission to the institute that we came to all about the institute and the numerous courses that it offered.

As we now understand, NUJS offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs mainly in the field of law. Its flagship undergraduate program is the 5-year integrated B.A. LL.B (Hons.) program. The course comprises of various aspects of legal studies such as litigation, corporate legal practice, legal academia, legal research, social service, economics, history, political science, and sociology. Some of the electives that one may opt for in this course are Corporate Finance, Competition Law, Securities Law, International Commercial Arbitration, Judicial Review, Nuclear Law, Law and Impoverishment, Law and Gender, Law and Economics, Law and Development, Biotechnology and Law, Medicine and Law, Law and Media, Sports and Law, Forensic Sciences, etc. The bulk of the admission is seen for this course.

NUJS also offers one-year postgraduate programs. Students successfully graduating from the program are awarded an LL.M. degree. Students undertaking the LL.M degree can select from a variety of specialisations. Some of these specializations are International and Comparative Law, Corporate and Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Law and Technology, and Criminal Law. It also has a research component to it, where students have to submit a thesis at the end of the course.

There are also a few programs related to the legal field offered by the institute, such as the M.Sc in Forensic Sciences. The program is of two years in duration and offers a number of specializations in the forensic field. NUJS also offers a variety of research programs like M.Phil, PhD and LLD for which one needs to be a postgraduate in the relevant field.

As for admissions to the above programs are concerned, for the undergraduate courses, you need to appear for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a national-level test, which is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities. The other requirement is that the aspiring students should have passed their 10+2 or an equivalent examination. For the postgraduate program or LL.M., the candidate should have completed LL.B. and also need to appear for the CLAT.

For the M.Sc in Forensic Science, one does not need any legal background nor appear for CLAT. Anyone with a B.Sc degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Computer Science or even LL.B and minimum 50% marks can apply.

In all, the National University of Juridical Sciences or NUJS is a prestigious one-of-a-kind institute not only in Kolkata but in the entire country in the field of legal education, with students coming from all across the country for a bright career in the field.
