Recently there are some changes in the eligibility criteria for admission to PhD by the University Grants Commission, Government of India.
1. As per the earlier rules a candidate should have a PG degree to go for a PhD. But now there is a change. As per the new rules announced by UGC, students who successfully completed a four-year undergraduate degree can directly pursue PhD programmes. But, the candidate should score a minimum of 75 % marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
2. The candidates with an M.Phil degree with at least 55 per cent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade are also eligible to join PhD course.
3. The Students who passed a 1-year master's degree programme after a 4-year bachelor's degree programme or a 2-year master's degree programme after a 3-year bachelor's degree programme with at least 55 per cent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade can also pursue their PhD.
4. Candidates working in other organisations can register for their PhD on a part-time basis.
These candidates should fulfil any one of the above 3 conditions. They should submit a letter from their employer saying that these candidates will have time to pursue their PhD programme and if necessary they will be relieved from the duty to complete their work related to their PhD.

The above rules are for all the universities that are in India and have UGC approval. The admission procedure for PhD may vary from university to university. Some universities got their own PhD admission tests and some may accord admission based on their performance in some other examinations like NET, GATE etc.

According to my own experience, the admission criteria for a PhD programme are often stringent and entail attaining specified prerequisites. Educational qualifications are one of the major factors, with a master's degree in a related discipline being a usual need. Candidates with a good undergraduate background may also be considered by some programmes, albeit this varies depending on the university and programme.

Admission to a PhD programme also requires research aptitude. Previous research experience, publications, or a well-crafted research proposal are often used to determine a good aptitude for research. Many PhD programmes demand that applicants provide a detailed research proposal explaining their desired study topic and approach.

Academic achievements are equally important in PhD admissions. A high GPA or academic honours, as well as good standardised test results like the GRE or GMAT, may be taken into account. Typically, letters of recommendation from professors, mentors, or employers who can speak to the applicant's academic achievements and research potential are required.

Furthermore, significant professional experience is frequently valued by PhD programmes. Work experience in a similar field, internships, or practical experience demonstrating the applicant's readiness and interest for doctoral-level research may be considered. Overall, the entrance criteria for a PhD programme are highly demanding and may differ based on the university, programme, and topic of study. To maximise your chances of admission to your selected PhD programme, carefully research the prerequisites and personalise your application to reflect your strengths and abilities.

When I applied for a PhD program, I had to demonstrate my academic excellence and suitability for the program through a range of criteria. This included providing evidence of my research and academic achievements, such as publications, awards, and distinctions. I was also required to submit a personal statement that outlined my research interests, objectives, and experience. Additionally, I had to score well on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and provide references from former professors. Thanks to my hard work and dedication, I was successfully accepted into the program.
