What are the differences between IIT and ITI? Elaborate on the different aspects.
Author: Sheo Shankar Jha Post Date: 30 Jan 2024 Let us elaborate on the two, that is, IIT and ITI, first to know their areas of functioning in the different domains. IIT denotes the Indian Institute of Technology imparting higher education in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. Contrary to this, ITI stands for the Industrial Training Institute providing vocational training so that the aspirants can get a gainful job in an industry in the form of Riggers, Fitters, Welders, etc after passing this course from a recognized institution.
The differences between the two are given below- 1) Level of the education- IIT provides undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs in a wide range of subjects including Engineering covering different streams such as Mechanical, Civil, Metallurgical, Chemical, Computer Science, etc apart from the coverage of the courses of the applied sciences and pure sciences.
ITI conducts short-term courses of different trades such as Rigger, Fitter, Welder, and Electrician so that the aspirants can be absorbed in the production industries to render their jobs in their specialized areas.
2) Duration of the course- The duration of the program for undergraduates in Engineering is of four years except the B. Arch program which takes 5 years and 6 months. For the postgraduate program in the pure sciences and the applied sciences, the total tenure of the course is a five-year term once the candidates are inducted into such a program.
ITI is a vocational program and its duration might vary from a few months to a year depending upon the trade chosen by the students.
3) Admission Requirements- IIT has stringent admission criteria and a highly competitive examination process to select the students for the different streams. To select the aspirants, IITs conducts written examinations twice a year to screen the eligible candidates for undergraduate courses in Engineering. This examination is known as the IIT Main. Then again the aspirants need to qualify for the IIT advanced for their final selection in the merit list for the different destinations of the IITs.
For the induction of the MTech program in the different disciplines such as Electrical, Chemical, Metallurgical, Computer Science, etc, the candidates must have a valid Gate score not less than 97 percentile. There could be a variation in percentile score depending upon the stream and the casting status of a candidate.
ITI needs a candidate with a Class 10 pass from a recognized board. Based on their performance in the Class 10 exam, they will be allotted to the different trades in order of merit.
4) Reputation and recognition - IITians are always recognized in terms of their agility during their studies and their spontaneous actions in the work environment.
Relating to the candidates having possessed the ITI certification, they get their due recognition due to their working skills, and wherever a job is needed matching their skills, they are hired outside the factory premises. In industries, the superiors are always looking for efficient tradesmen possessing the ITI Certification.
5) The focus of the study- About pursuing IIT courses, enough care has been taken to make the syllabus more updated - both in terms of theoretical and practical aspects. It is revised from time to time to make the same more relevant according to the current situation.
The ITI courses are designed to enhance the skill development of the students with the appropriate inclusions of both theoretical and practical knowledge so that they might get a gainful employment due to their abilities.
Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 29 Jan 2024 IIT is an institution. The full form is the Indian Institute of Technology. There are 23 IITs across India. The first generation IITs were established in 1950. Each IIT has its speciality but all IITs are committed to rendering the highest standard of class education to its students. All IITs offer UG courses in Engineering and Technology. In addition to that they offer PG courses in Humanities, management, engineering, technology, design, and sciences. Top Indian MNCs and other MNCs prefer students from these institutes to man various positions in their organizations. The seats in these institutes will be provided based on the ranks obtained in a joint entrance test called JEE Mains and Advanced. These IITs are competing with world-class educational institutes in the world and producing qualified eminent professionals.
ITI is also an institute. There are many in our country both in the government sector and private sector. They train students in different trades like mechanics. Automobile, Electrical, fitter, etc. The students who finished this course will be employed as operators are various industrial equipment and also to execute shop floor works. The minimum prescribed qualification for admission is a pass in the 8th class. Some institutes take only 10th-passed students for this certification course. Many industries appoint these ITI certificate holders as operators for operating equipment. The chances for them to go to higher positions are very low unless otherwise, they improve their qualification and subject knowledge.
