Copywriters are the professionals who create 'copy' wherein 'copy' is the text material used in advertising for marketing and selling products. Copywriting is a centuries old profession and creative craft.

The terms copy and copywriting are also used in various other sectors. In Journalism copy is the text of the news report or news article. Copyright is about the ownership rights of the text(copy) by the writer of that text. In graphic design and /or typography, a copy is also termed 'body copy".

What is a copywriter's work

A copywriter is entrusted with the task of creating text content for the particular advertising or marketing requirement needed by the clients. The copy created may be for catalogs, advertisements, websites, e-mails, print, audio and visual media, social media, etc. The copy should satisfy the requirements of the client for the particular purpose. The same should be concise and precise and should convey the message targeted clearly so that it is also attractive and captivating to immediately get customers' attention. So, the copywriter should also have some understanding of the target segment market and customers.

Skills needed for a copywriter

A copy writer needs to have good communication skills, as he has to convey to the customers what his client wants and also to understand and clearly assimilate what the client wants. A copywriter also needs writing skills, to use the right and apt words as per the requirement. In the present time, a copywriter should also have SEO skills.

Qualifications needed for a copywriter

While a Bachelor's degree (Graduate degree) is normally the minimum qualification, nowadays most media houses prefer Post Graduate courses in Journalism or a Post graduate degree in English. Qualifications in Marketing, communications, and creative writing are also preferred.

For specialized industries like Pharmacy, engineering, manufacturing, etc. in addition to proven writing skills, knowledge or background in that industry is also needed.

Copywriters are creative wordsmiths. They need constant updating and improvement. They may start with an internship and learn from seniors with experience. There are many certification programs for improving skills and staying updated.
