A lab technician is a person who works in the laboratory, whether it is a medical lab or a non-medical lab. Apart from medical labs, there are several labs that employ lab technicians. You could become a lab technician after completing a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in chemistry, a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in microbiology, or a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biotechnology. Yet, certain institutions provide specialised training that might help you become a professional lab technician. This is a list of some of the courses:

1) Environmental Laboratory Monitoring, by TERI
2) Certificate course in Environmental Monitoring and Data Management, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi
3) Certificate program from laboratory techniques from Ignou, New Delhi
4) Post Graduate Diploma in Chemical Lab Technician, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur
5) Chemical Laboratory Technician, Ankleshwar Environment Preservation Society, Akleshwar
6) Microbiology laboratory testing from Udemy
7) Certificate course for Laboratory Technician for Ecofriendly food testing laboratory, offered by Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Resource Partner Consumer Education and Research Centre, Ahmedabad and Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, New Delhi
8) Certificate Course in Laboratory Technicians/Technical Assistants for Energy Efficiency, Star Labelling and other Electrical Testing for Environmental Criteria offered by Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Resource Partner Consumer Education and Research Centre, Ahmedabad and Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, New Delhi

Laboratory or Lab for short, is a place where testing is done for the various parameters. Lab technician is one who works in such labs and has the knowledge and qualification to conduct such tests.

The labs are different types like chemical labs, Physical labs, equipment labs, Medical labs etc.

However when we say Lab Technician it is generally meant as Lab Technician in the medical field. Ordinary people understand Lab technician as one who take and tests and analyses the samples taken of a patient, as per the directions and prescriptions of a medical doctor. Or more simply pathology lab technician.
However even under medical field there are different branches or categories where testing is done for medical equipment, radiation protection etc. etc.

Food industry, food supplements, confectionaries, etc. also need lab technicians to test and analyse input ingredients and output products. These come under and known as quality control labs. The people working there are known as chemists, and Lab assistants rather than Lab technicians.

When it comes to Lab Technician courses, there are a lot of options beyond the Medical field. For instance, if you're interested in getting a degree, you could look into a Laboratory Science degree program. These courses cover basic lab safety, sample handling, and analytical techniques, as well as other specialized topics like immunology or chromatography.

For those who are looking to work in a more hands-on role, there are also certificate programs offering skills in biotechnology, genetics, histology, or hematology. These certificates give you the knowledge and experience needed to get a job in the lab, as well as the chance to learn more specialized skills or techniques.

If you're looking for something a bit more focused, you may be interested in becoming a Clinical Lab Technician. These courses focus on various medical lab tests, such as blood tests, cell counts, and biopsies, and can help you develop the skills necessary to safely and accurately perform these tests.

Finally, if you're more inclined towards the engineering side of things, Lab Technician courses for Electrical or Mechanical Engineering are also available. These courses are a great way to learn about the development of electrical and mechanical systems and how to maintain them.

No matter which Lab Technician course you choose, you can be sure to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to have a successful career.
