NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) is an initiative taken by first-generation IITs and IISc. For almost the last ten years this is offering self-study courses across engineering, humanities and science subjects. In March 2014 NPTEL started offering online certification courses. The students who completed a course here will have the advantage of obtaining a certificate from IITs. You can refer to the site Swayam for further details.
There are many merits. Some are listed below.
1. The course material will be made by the expert faculties of IITs/IISc.
2. A candidate who successfully clears a course can get certified by NPTEL and IITs/IISc.
3. The site will mention the names of the industries that will consider that course certificate
4. NPTEL will send the list of toppers to the concerned industries for consideration for recruitment in their organisation.
5. There will be weekly assignments. Students can self-evaluate by answering these assignments. They can understand their level of knowledge and try to improve in the areas where some improvement is required.
6. The candidate can hear the lectures of IIT/IISc distinguished Faculty
7. Course faculty will interact with the student to clear their doubts.
8. Certificates will have the IIT stamp and hence are valuable additions to the students and they are very useful in obtaining jobs.
9. Certificates recognized by many Companies and research centres and will give chance for internship also.
10. A student who couldn't get a seat in IIT through entrance tests can study here for some courses and can secure a certificate from an IIT.

Some courses even made it mandatory to finish particular videos and took quizzes on them. While the initiative has been praised for its wide reach and accessibility, it also has its fair share of merits and demerits.
