CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme:

There are many Post Doctoral Research fellowships for PhD holders in India. One prominent one among such scholarships is CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. The details of the same are presented here. I feel this is one of the best fellowships available in our country.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a unique organisation helping India to progress in the field of Scientific research in the country. This organisation is having about 37 state-of-the-art institutes, conducting research in various science streams. IICT, Hyderabad is one among them. CSIR laboratories are providing a training ground for most of India's talented scientists and technologists.

CSIR is offering Junior research fellowships through the NET exam. I did my PhD with a CSIR fellowship only. Those days there was no entrance test. Fellowships were offered based on the merit of the student in the qualifying examination. If the scholar was showing some progress in the first two years of research, the Junior Research Fellowship was getting changed to Senior Research Fellowship. After submitting the thesis, if the research director and the head of the institution recommend the scholar was getting Post Doctoral Fellowship for a period of 2 years. I was a CSIR Post Doctoral fellow at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam for about 18 months.

"CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme" has been instituted by CSIR. The main objective of the scheme is to facilitate the transition of the Research Scholar from a mentored to an independent research career. Every year CSIR is offering one hundred (100) such fellowships.

A) Eligibility criteria:
1. PhD degree holders within three years of the award of their PhD degree. Scholars who have submitted PhD theses are also eligible to apply. Scholars who are about to submit their thesis can also apply. Their selection will be subject to the condition that they would have submitted their thesis before the expiry of the validity of the award offer.

2. The applicants should have published some research papers in high-impact SCI journals.

3. Maximum Age Limit: 32 years. 5 years of relaxation will be considered in the case of SC/ST/OBC/Physically handicapped and women candidates.

B) Tenure of the fellowship: It is two years. But maybe extended by one more year based on the performance and recommendation from the Director of the CSIR lab where the scholar is carrying out his research work working.

C) Remuneration: CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Fellows will be paid a consolidated fellowship of Indian Rs. 35,000/- per month plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per the existing rules.

In addition to the above a contingency grant of Rs. 3.0 lakh per annum will also be given. 25% of this grant can be used for domestic and international travel including per diem expenses.
The candidate may be provided accommodation by that particular CSIR lab if available and also eligible for medical benefits as per the rules applicable

C) Mode of selection:
Eligible candidates can apply in the prescribed format, available on the website www.csirhrdg.res.in, at any time of the year. The selections will be made twice a year, in the months of June and December. Applications that are received two months before the interview date will only be considered.

The applications must be sent through the sponsoring CSIR laboratory. The candidate has to make a presentation on the proposed research project. Then an interview will be conducted for the shortlisted candidates.

Applications duly filled in the prescribed format and complete in all respect should be sent to:
The Incharge.

Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi-110012
The candidate should write on the top of the cover "Application for CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship" very clearly.

With my experience as Post Doctoral fellow, I recommend scholars who really wanted to continue their career in Research or teaching line only should go for this fellowship.

For further details the candidate can refer to the CSIR website which is referred above.
