IIST or the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is a premier institute for space science and related courses situated at Thiruvananthapuram in the Indian state of Kerala. It is a pride of place for all Indians, as it is the only institute in India that is specifically meant for the field of aerospace and space research. No wonder, many students every year after graduating from this prestigious institute get absorbed in Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Many others opt for higher studies or even go to the United States and other Western countries and become a part of their space organizations.

With several private players coming into the field of space research and exploration, notably SpaceX (founder Elon Musk), Virgin Galactic (founder Richard Branson), Blue Origin (founder Jeff Bezos) and scores of others, there are opportunities galore for a career in this field. Even in India, several private players are coming up like Skyroot Aerospace, which has for the first time in India in November 2022 launched a privately made rocket into space. Agnikul Cosmos is another private space company in India that too is planning to launch its mission very soon. ISRO itself is achieving a lot in this direction, as its commercial arm, New Space India, has as recently as March 2023 launched three dozen satellites to low-earth orbit for a London-based company called One Web Ltd. as part of its communication network. Chandrayaan-3, India's forthcoming mission to the moon is almost at the final stage for take-off in the month of July.

With such growing opportunities in the field of space, a degree obtained from IIST Thiruvananthapuram is no doubt of immense value. I specifically know of a student who despite qualifying for admission to one of the IITs, chose to take admission at IIST, as his dreams were aligned towards a career in space research.

Following are the three undergraduate courses on offer at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology-

B.Tech Aerospace Engineering

This is the flagship program at IIST offered by the institute. It is a 4-year program with significant overlap with subjects in mechanical engineering. Some of the subjects that the students get to study are Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Science, Structure and design, Aerodynamics, Space Dynamics, Flight Mechanics, Thermal & Propulsion, and so on.

B.Tech Electronics & Communication Engineering (Avionics)

This is another popular 4-year program offered by the institute for students who are interested in avionics or the electronics and communication-related aspects of space technology. The course is specially oriented towards a career in the aerospace field. The subjects that the students get to study in this program are Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, and Communication Engineering. Some of the topics that will get covered in these subjects are Digital Signal Processing, RF & Microwave Communications, Control Systems, Antennas, Power Electronics, Robotics, Microelectronics, and Artificial Intelligence. Students after completing this program can take up a career or higher studies anywhere in the field of electronics and communication besides space technology.

B.Tech. + Master of Science/Master of Technology (dual degree)

This is a 5-year dual degree program, where the student gets both the B.Tech as well as a Master of Science or M.Tech degree. The first, second and third year of this program is similar to the B.Tech programs, which include foundation courses in physics, mathematics and engineering. From the fourth year onwards the students get to specialize in one of the four specializations available and the fifth year is mainly dedicated to research, the successful completion of which, ultimately leads to a dual degree.

The four specializations available for the dual degree program are.
  1. Master of Science in Astronomy & Astrophysics - Aims at concepts related to physics and their applications concerning the universe, galaxy, stars, sun and the planets.

  2. Master of Science in Solid State Physics - A research-based program that introduces students to semiconductor devices and their applications. The program is also good for those who are seeking a career in Condensed Matter Physics and its research.

  3. M.Tech. in Earth System Science - It introduces the students to the components of the Earth Systems and their mutual interaction. By Earth Systems is meant the system by virtue of which the physical, chemical and biological processes of the planet interact with each other Some of these components are the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere.

  4. M.Tech. in Optical Engineering - This is an advanced program that has aspects related to the optical industry and the present and future developments in the optical field. Some of the technologies discussed in the program are optoelectronics, lens design & optical fabrication, and adaptive optics

Thus it can be seen that IIST Thiruvananthapuram offers three good UG programs, out of which one is a dual degree. All three programs are of immense value, as successful completion of each one of them leads you to a great career in the aerospace industry.

IIST is the first space university in Asia. The same was established at Thiruvananthapuram in the year 2007. The same is established with the aim of imparting high-quality education in space science and technology. The curriculum of these courses is designed in such a way that the students who came out of the institute will be ready to meet the demands of the Indian Space Programme. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral programmes in space science, technology and applications.

The following are the undergraduate courses offered by this institute.

1. B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering. The duration of the course is 4 years and the number of seats is 66. Out of these 66 seats, 6 are reserved for economically weaker sections.

2. B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering ( Avionics). The duration of the course is 4 years and the number of seats is 66. Out of these seats, 6 are for economically weaker sections.

3. Dual Degree (B.Tech and Master of Science/ M.Tech. The duration of the course is 5 years and the number of seats is.22. 2 out of 22 are for economically weaker sections.

The reservations for other categories will be as follows. The percentage will be calculated on the remaining seats after removing seats for economically weaker sections.

• Scheduled Castes (SC): 15%
• Scheduled Tribes (ST): 7.5%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer (NCL): 27%
• Persons with Disabilities (PD): 5% (Horizontal Reservation)
