What are vertical reservations and horizontal reservations of seats for courses in India?

The reservation in favour of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward Classes as defined in Article 16(4) is called Vertical Reservations. Contrary to this, Reservations in favour of the physically handicapped under clause(1) of Article 16 can be categorized as horizontal reservations. It is applicable separately for each of the groups specified under the law. Article 16(4) of the Constitution comes under the category of Vertical Reservation.
Now let us elaborate on the features of Horizontal Reservation -
1) It provides equal opportunity to other categories of beneficiaries such as women, veterans, transgender communities and individuals with disabilities.
2) Article 15(3) of our constitution defines the Horizontal Reservation.
