Nowadays we see many Deemed to be universities in almost all the places. The following are the types of universities in India.

1. Central Universities: These are formed by the central government and managed with funds from the Central government. UGC approvals are required.

2. State Universities: These universities are formed by the state government and managed by the state government only. UGC approvals are required.

3. Private University: These are the universities incorporated by some private bodies with permission from the UGC and UGC will be monitoring them.

4. Deemed to be University: This can be a private or government institution. Based on the curriculum. facilities provided and standards maintained UGC may recommend this status to some of the institutions of higher learning and based on the recommendations of UGC the central government may declare this status to that institute.

5. Autonomous: They are not deemed universities. But they can conduct their own examinations with the approval of the university with which the institute is affiliated.

The following are the similarities and differences between a University ( Central/ State) and a Deemed to be university.

1. Both can decide on their own the admission process based on the guidelines given by the UGC.

2. Both can give degrees to the students who fulfil the requirement as per the UGC regulations.

3. A university will have affiliated colleges and all these colleges will follow the affiliated university's syllabus etc and examinations will be conducted by the university only. A deemed to be university will not have any affiliated colleges with it. A deemed to be university can conduct its own examinations.

4. Administration of the university will be carried out by the State government or the central government For deemed universities autonomy will be given by the Department of Higher Education (DHE), MHRD, based on the suggestion of the UGC. The Deemed-to-be university status can be withdrawn anytime if the standards are not maintained and if not following the standards prescribed by the UGC.

A student need not worry about status as long as the institute is a standard institute and imparts a quality education.

The main difference between a university and a deemed university lies in their legal status and the way they are established.

University:
A university is an educational institution that typically offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across a wide range of disciplines. It has the authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and certificates. In most countries, universities are established by an act of legislation or through a government charter. They often have their own governance structure and are responsible for setting academic standards, conducting research, and promoting knowledge in various fields.

Deemed University:
A deemed university is an institution that does not have the full status of a university but has been granted the recognition of a university by the government. In some countries, including India, this recognition is given by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or other similar regulatory bodies. Deemed universities are typically existing institutions that demonstrate high standards of academic excellence and research. They are granted the status of a university to offer specialized courses and grant degrees in specific areas of study.

While a university is a fully recognized institution that can independently grant degrees across multiple disciplines, a deemed university is an institution with specialized focus areas that has been granted the status of a university by the government or a regulatory body.

Deemed universities enjoy an accreditation granted to them in India. They have their own academic start ups, privileges and autonomy in terms of introduction of courses, fees, eligibility for admissions for various courses etc.
Accreditation is conferred by the Ministry of Human Resources for the initiation of the courses subject to fulfilment of UGC recommendations.

There exists a difference between deemed universities and other universities in the sense that deemed universities are enjoying the status of full fledged universities and are awarded the status of autonomy conferred to them with the allotment to the designation of deemed by DHE under MHRD on the suggestion of UGC.

Universities have their own fee structures, courses of studies and other norms. The authorities would ensure that the courses are designed keeping in view of its affordability and its economic angle so that the courses would suit the pockets of the aspirants.
