Author: Roshan Salim Post Date: 16 Apr 2023 The Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) is a comprehensive database of information on schools in India. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and was launched in 2012. The UDISE database collects and stores information on all schools in India, including government, government-aided, and private schools. The data collected includes information on school infrastructure, enrolment, student-teacher ratios, gender parity, and other relevant indicators.
The main objective of the UDISE is to provide a reliable and accurate database on education in India. It is intended to be a one-stop-shop for all education-related data and to enable policy-makers and researchers to make informed decisions about education policy and planning.
The UDISE database is updated annually through a data collection process that involves all schools in the country. The data is collected in a standardized format and covers a range of indicators related to school infrastructure, enrolment, teacher availability, and learning outcomes.
Some of the key indicators captured in the UDISE database include:
1. School infrastructure: This includes information on the availability of classrooms, toilets, drinking water, electricity, and other facilities in schools.
2. Enrolment: The database captures information on the number of students enrolled in each school, broken down by grade level and gender.
3. Teacher availability: The database collects information on the number of teachers in each school, their qualifications, and their subject expertise.
4. Learning outcomes: The database also captures information on student achievement in terms of learning outcomes, such as literacy and numeracy skills.
The UDISE data is used by the Ministry of Education, state governments, and other stakeholders to monitor progress in education and to identify areas where improvements are needed. The data is also used to develop education policies and programs that are evidence-based and responsive to the needs of students and teachers.
In addition to providing a comprehensive database on education in India, the UDISE also serves as a tool for monitoring the implementation of various education-related programs and initiatives. The database is used to track the progress of initiatives such as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, which aims to provide universal access to education, and the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, which provides free meals to students in government schools.
In conclusion, the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) is a crucial initiative of the Indian government that aims to provide accurate and reliable data on education in India. The data collected through the UDISE database is used to monitor progress in education and to develop evidence-based policies and programs that respond to the needs of students and teachers.
