There are 31 NITs or National Institute of Technologies in India. Set up by the Central Government, most NITs, especially the older ones are famed for their quality of education and infrastructure. It is the dream of every engineering aspirant to get a seat, if not in any old IIT, then at least in any one of the top NITs. These NITs, which have been declared as Institutions of National Importance are funded by the Government of India and are fully autonomous, just like the IITs. Fourteen of these NITs were established between 1959 to 1965 as Regional Engineering Colleges in different cities across India. The others were established in later years.

The ranking of engineering institutions is done by various organisations. The most well-known is the NIRF or the National Institutional Ranking Framework by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. The NIRF rankings are published every year and the following are the top five NITs in India as per NIRF 2022 ranking.

  1. National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli

NIT Trichy or Tiruchirapally is the highest-ranked NIT in India as per the above ranking framework. Its All India rank is 8, just below IIT Guwahati. Interestingly, it is ahead of IIT Hyderabad and other very good IITs. Established in 1964, the engineering institution in the state of Tamil Nadu was earlier known as Regional Engineering College (REC) Tiruchirapally.

  2. National Institute of Technology Karnataka

NIT Karnataka (NITK) is also known as NITK Suratkal, because of its location in the coastal town of Suratkal in the Karnataka state. Its NIRF 2022 ranking for engineering institutions is 10, a very commendable rank considering that it is ranked above almost every new IIT. Founded in 1960 as a REC, it is even older than NIT Trichy. The interesting thing about NITK is that the campus is located just beside the coastal waters of the Arabian Sea.

  3. National Institute of Technology Rourkela

With an AIR ranking of 15, NIT Rourkela is the third-topmost NIT in India. Located in the steel city of Rourkela in Odisha, it was established in the year 1961.

  4. National Institute of Technology Warangal

NIT Warangal, located in the state of Telangana was founded in 1959 and is thus the first NIT (then REC) to be established in India. Its foundation was laid by the then Prime Minister of India Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru. Its current NIRF ranking is 21 and is thus the fourth-ranked NIT.

  5. National Institute of Technology Calicut

NIT Calicut, located in Kerala ranks 31st as per NIRF ranking. The institute was established in 1961 as a REC. NIT Calicut is popular for the supercomputer that it has on its campus. Its nanotechnology department is also quite popular among students.

Apart from the above five NITs, there are many more, which are pretty popular with students. Some of these are the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, NIT Durgapur, NIT Kurukshetra and so on. All the above NITs have excellent infrastructure facilities in terms of departments, classrooms, laboratories, hostel facilities, sports, extra-curricular activities, mess, etc.

I was talking to my friends about the top institutes for engineering after graduation and they suggested institutes such as the National Institute of Technology in Trichy, Karnataka (Surathkal), Warangal, Calicut, and Rourkela. These institutions have excellent faculty, facilities, and academic programs in the engineering field. And these institutions have the best teaching, resources for study, graduation outcomes, and overall best options for their academics. Personally, I want to tell you that you should choose the institution by your goals and interests. You need to research whether the institution has industry connections and campus culture which can help the education experience.
