India was having only 7 IITs before 2008.
But from 2008 till today another 16 new IITs are added. As of date, there are 23 IITS.
The new additions are shown below and the NIRF rankings of these institutes in 2022 are shown in Brackets.

1. IIT Ropar (22)
2. IIT Bhubaneswar (36)
3. IIT Gandhinagar (23)
4. IIT Hyderabad (14)
5. IIT Jodhpur (30)
6. IIT Patna (33)
7. IIT Indore (16)
8. IIT Mandi (20)
9. IIT Varanasi (13)
10. IIT Palakkad (68)
11. IIT Tirupathi (56)
12. IIT Dhanbad (14)
13. IIT Bhilai -
14. IIT Dharwad -
15. IIT Jammu -
16. IIT Goa. -
The name IIT itself adds value to the institution as the first-generation IITs established their credentials internationally as the best institutions in India. The Second and third-generation IITs also are trying to keep up that tradition by maintaining the same standards as that of first-generation IITs. Based on the NIRF ranking in 2022, the following five can be considered as the best 5 institutes among the new generation IITs.

1 IIT, Varanasi
2 IIT, Hyderabad
3 IIT. Dhanbad
4 IIT, Indore
5 IIT, Mandi.
But based on the feedback I had from various sources I select the following as the first 5 IITs in the new additions.

IIT, Hyderabad is designing new courses, especially in the niche areas like Nanotechnology and Artificial Intelligence etc. The university is availing the expertise of senior faculty available at IIT, Chennai and also availing the service of some of the experts available in various central laboratories in Hyderabad and also from Industry. Personally, I visited this institute and interacted with some of the faculty here and definitely, this will be the first rank IIT among the new generation.

Next comes IIT, Indore. It is the best new-generation having a very good infrastructure and facilities and having a very good reputation in coding. This institute is availing the senior faculty available at IIT. Mumbai and progressing well. This IIT will be the second best

IIT Gandhinagar is the third best in my opinion. The faculty is an asset to this institute. They are very friendly and keep up their values meticulously.

The fourth one is IIT Ropar. A strong teaching faculty and quality research are being carried out in some important areas.

The fifth place goes to IIT, Bhubaneswar. Best teaching practices and equal importance to extra circular activities are also being given.
