IIT Jodhpur and BITS Pilani, both are one of the best institutes in the country, one state-owned and the other in the private domain. Now comparing between the two for the computer science course, we need to consider a few facts about both the institutes. In addition, we need to consider that IIT Jodhpur is a single institute, whereas BITS Pilani has several campuses. The Pilani campus being the best, not all the campuses of BITS have the same reputation or rating.

Anyway, coming to BITS, Pilani campus, it is a very old institute with a rich past. It was established in 1964 under the mentorship or you may say in association with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the famed tech institute in the United States. The Birlas, one of the two famed business empires during those times in India, left no stone unturned in developing BITS Pilani into a world-class institute. Today, with three campuses in India and one in Dubai, the engineering institute is very well renowned both in India and abroad. Anyone studying in any of the campuses of BITS Pilani, especially in the computer science stream, is assured of a very good placement. Add to it, the infrastructure at each of its campuses is also of international standard. Be it hostels, academic halls, administrative blocks, library, laboratories, canteens or sports infrastructure, these are one of the best in the country. The institute also has a huge alumni network spread across the world, many of them in top positions in multinational companies. Many others have taken the route of entrepreneurship and have established startups of their own. The startup culture at BITS Pilani is very much vibrant. Many people I know who have studied there will vouch for it. In fact, many from my known circle of friends and acquaintances have studied or studying in BITS. As I stay in Hyderabad, I have seen the Hyderabad campus personally.

On the other hand, IIT Jodhpur is part of the famed IIT group of colleges in India. IITs are well acclaimed all over the world, and anyone who has studied in any of its top branches finds easy recognition. Wherever you go, be in the United States, UK, Australia and so on, everyone in the corporate sector there has heard about the IITs. The IITs have so much value in India that parents across the country dream of their children studying in any of its famed institutes. The entrance exam, especially for its UG courses are one of the most competitive one in the world and only the most talented or the most studious ones are able to crack it.

However, one thing that goes against IIT Jodhpur is that it is a relatively new institute established in 2008. Its infrastructure and reputation is still to develop. Like many of the other new IITs, it somehow does not have the same respect like the older ones, namely IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and so on. Sure, in the coming years all the new IITs will gain in recognition and reputation and they will close the gap between the new and old, however, as of now, they are clearly not at the same level as the older IITs. No doubt, IIT Jodhpur is gaining in reputation with every passing year, with the central government focusing in developing and bringing all the new IITs at par with the older ones, it is still years away from that dream.

BITS, Pilani campus in on the other hand is at par with the old IITs. Just like in the old IITs, the best students in the country study here and the faculty is also of the highest standard. So, in that sense, BITs Pilani clearly scores over IIT Jodhpur, as the latter is a relatively new institute and is still in the growth stage, whereas the BITS Pilani campus is already a well established and well-acclaimed institute, both in India and overseas.

Therefore, in case your dream is to study at an IIT, then you may choose IIT Jodhpur over BITS. Like one of my friends' daughter, even though being a good student could not achieve her dream of studying B.Tech at an IIT. So she set off to achieve that dream for post-graduation. With her efforts she has now got admission at IIT Indore and doing her M.Tech there, thus fulfilling her dream of studying at an IIT. If you are in a similar situation, where you did not get the opportunity to do your bachelors at an IIT but now seeking the IIT tag for your masters, then you can very well go for IIT Jodhpur. On the other hand, you do not have any such fancy or liking for the IIT tag and simply want to go for the best institute, then blindly go for BITS Pilani, assuming that it was Pilani campus that you meant. You will never regret your decision of studying at BITS Pilani. Infrastructure wise, campus wise, facilities wise, in no way it is less than IIT Jodhpur. In addition, the cherry on the top is the placements that are one of the best in the country at BITS Pilani.

IIT Jodhpur and BITS Pilani, both are good. Only the best get to study at these places. So any decision you take, you will be never at loss. Both institutes will reward you. The decide between the two, only rests on your priorities, whatever they are. So decide accordingly as per your needs.

IIT Jodhpur is one of the latest additions to IITs and it was established in the year 2008. IITs are very standard institutes and getting a seat in these IITs is itself considered a big achievement. IIT degrees are having recognition all over the world. But definitely, the old IIT standards are different from the 2nd and 3rd generation IITs. Even though these new additions are taking effective steps to establish themselves and see that the standards of IITs are maintained, it may take some good time to reach the level of old IITs. IITs curriculum is more focused on research and innovation.

Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) is one of India's oldest private institutions. It was established in 1964 by the Birla family in Pilani, Rajasthan. Engineering degrees from this institute are very well recognised all over the world. It offers integrated dual degrees at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It has its main campus in Pilani and there are another four campuses. The curriculum is designed in such a way that the student qualifying from this institute will have a holistic view of engineering and technology.

Both IIT, Jodhpur and BITS. Pilani is considered one of the few best institutions in the country. IITs select candidates based on JEE advanced results whereas BITS Pilani allots seats based on an entrance test conducted by BITS, Pilani itself. The BITS admission process is very transparent and has no reservations or no management quota.

Being a private institute BITS fees are higher than that of IITs. The funding for IITs will come from the Central Government whereas BITS will get money from Birla Family.

BITS as well as IITs are having accreditations from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). BITS is also accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

BITS is having excellent infrastructure. The classrooms are modern with a very good ambience and the laboratories are having very good facilities with modern equipment. IIT, Jodhpur is also having good infrastructure. BITS Pilani is having experienced and capable faculty which strives for excellence always. The number of students in a section is fixed and there will not be any increase in the number of seats

In my opinion, both institutes are good for postgraduation in computer science. As IITs are giving more thrust for innovation and research, students who are more interested in research and want to continue their studies further can opt for IIT, Jodhpur. Otherwise, the placement records are good in both institutes. But BITS will have an edge over IIT, Jodhpur as the latter one is a new addition to IITs. So students who wanted to have a placement after M Tech can opt for BITS.

But I feel after joining any institute the outcome depends more on the individual efforts and the interest the student is having. So I advise the individual to make his own decision based on the facts given above. PG degree in computer engineering from both the institutes will have almost the same value but the difference will come only from the performance of the individual.
