The University has its origin in erstwhile Himachal Agricultural College and Research Institute, Solan established in 1962 with its affiliation to Panjab University, Chandigarh. The College was raised to the status of Post-graduate College in 1965 when it introduced M.Sc.(Agriculture) programmes in some important subjects. With the establishment of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in 1970, its affiliation changed to HPU and thereafter it became Agriculture Complex of HPU, Shimla in July, 1971. This Agriculture Complex further became Horticulture Complex of HPU and Himacahal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (HPKV), Palampur in 1976 and 1978, respectively. On December , 1985 this complex got the recognition of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan named after Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the architect of Himachal Pradesh and visionary of Horticulture and Forestry University for the state of Himachal Pradesh

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (YSP UHF), popularly called Dr. Y. S. Paramar University of Horticulture and Forestry, is a state university located at Solan, Himachal Pradesh. This university is named after Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, offers various UG, PG, as well as Research degrees in various areas of Agriculture Science & Agro Business Management.

Various colleges under this university are - College of Horticulture at Nauni, College of Forestry at Nauni, and College of Forestry & Horticulture at Neri.

The university also has a College of Horticulture & Center of Excellence for Horticulture Research & Extension (CEHRE) at Thunag, aiming skill development and research in horticulture.

Admissions, Dr. Y.S. Paramar University of Horticulture and Forestry

Admission to all B.Sc courses will be through a university level entrance test, and 85% seats are reserved for those from Himachal Pradesh. 15% seats will be filled through national level entrance test, conducted by ICAR.

Admission to 25% seats of all PG courses (M.Sc or MBA) will be filled throgh ICAR's entrance exam. MBA admissions will be finalized after one more round with GD & PI. Out of the remaining seats, 50% will be reserved for students from Himachal Pradesh; Rest 50% seats will be self financing seats.
