Established in 1996 aiming the progress of higher education in the districts of Kannur, Kasargod, and Wayanad. The university offers UG, PG, as well as Research courses in through its various schools or departments of studies. UG courses are mainly offered by its affiliated colleges.

Admission details, Kannur University

Admission to UG courses will be finalized on the basis of marks obtained by the candidate for his / her 12th or equivalent, through a centralized process called UG CAP.

PG admissions will be done on the basis of a university level entrance test, PG CAP, for candidates who have completed their graduation.

Admission to bachelor courses like B.Ed, and LLB will be open for candidates who have completed their UG.

Research degree admissions (PhD, M.Phil) will be open to candidates with PG, and admissions will be finalized based on their performance in an entrance test conducted by the university. Syllabus for this test will be same as that of UGC/NET syllabus, for the same subject. However, some candidates are exempted from this entrance test. They are,
i) Who have valid NET/JRF/CSIR or equivalent scores.
ii) Who are currently employed with aided colleges / who are currently employed at unaided colleges under Kannur university with a minimum experience of 5years.
iii) Who have Govt. fellowships or funding.
iv) Who have already completed their M.Phil (in case of PhD admissions)
v) Who work as permanent scientists / social scientists at Govt, sectors for a minimum of 3years.
