The Indian Maritime University came into existence in the year 2008 and was under the guidance of the Central Universities. It believed in focusing its strength in the field of the development with regards to the human resources who were being trained. They are inclined towards the studies related to different topics like Maritime history, oceanography, security, rescue and many more topics. They ensure that the candidates who are associated with their universities should reach to greater heights and do proud to the organization. In recent years the two more campuses which came into being are- IMU Cochin and IMU Kandla. Apart from recent campuses there are around seven premier government institutes which are covering the topics mentioned above.

The major focus of the University is to handle and promote the studies with respect to the Maritime, which would be including the research, training and further extension of the work with major concentration towards emerging and innovative ideas of Maritime history, Laws, societies, search and secure venues with revenues, transportation of the difficult cargo and also handles the Environmental studies. They want to take appropriate actions which could help them in handling the teaching and the learning processes, inter-disciplinary services and researches and also planning to pay off special attention in promoting the services and the economical interests along with the focus on the welfare of the society across India. They also want to focus on the promotion of the freedom, equality, secularism and social justice which are enshrined in the constitutions of India and want to work as the socio-economic transformation via promoting basic attitudes and values of the essence for the national development.
The Universities comprises of different authorities like-the Court, The Executive council, the academic council, the planning board, the board of affiliation and recognition and finally the board of schools. The headquarter of the University is located in Chennai and further the new building of it's headquarter is being build on the 300 acres of land which has been alloted to the University. It has also got its regional campuses at different locations such as –Cochin and Kandla, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Vishakhapatnam etc. IMU day is celebrated on 14th November at their Campus.

•Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime studies and research (Mumbai)
• Marine Engineering Research Institute (Mumbai)
•Marine Engineering Research Institute (Kolkata)
•Indian Institute of Port Management (Kolkata)
• National ship design and research centre (Visakhapatnam)

• B.Tech Marine Engineering
• B.Sc Nautical Science
• B.Sc ship building and repair
• Diploma in Nautical science leading to the B.Sc Nautical sciences.
