Jai Prakash Vishwavidyala (University) was established on 22.11.90 by the enactment of Section 3(b) of Bihar State Universities Act, 1976 with its Head Quarters at Chapra, after Carving it out from the then, Bihar University(Now B.R.A.Bihar University) Muzaffarpur. The territorial jurisdiction of the University is stretched over the whole of Saran Division Comprising three districts of Chapra, Siwan and Gopalganj. The Colleges situated in these districts were automatically transferred to Jai Prakash University, Chapra. There are altogether 21 constitute Colleges, 2 Affilated deficit Grant Colleges ( including one minority College) and eight affiliated Colleges.

Jai Prakash University (JPU) or Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya is a premiere university in Chhapra, Bihar. JPU was established with a primary aim to improve higher education in Saran or Chhapra district of Bihar state.

JPU offers intermediate (also called pre-degree / 12th / +2 / higher secondary or equivalent), UG, PG, distance education, as well as vocational courses in various streams through its various faculties which has different departments under it.

i) Faculty of Social Sciences

ii) Faculty of Science

iii) Faculty of Commerce

iv) Faculty of Humanities

JPU also offers professional courses like LLB, and doctoral degrees like PhD.

Admissions, Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya

LLB admissions can either be on the basis of an entrance test conducted by the university, or on the basis of marks obtained for the graduation or UG.

All other admissions will be purely based on the marks obtained by the applicant for their qualifying examination (i.e. UG marks for PG admissions, marks obtained in 12th or equivalent, 10th or secondary school marks equivalent for intermediate / 12th admissions).
