The English and Foreign Language University known as EFLU in short was set up in 1958 as a Central Institute of English (CIE) in Hyderabad. Later, the university expanded with the inclusion of major foreign languages in 1972 and was renamed as Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL). In 1973 in recognition of its high standards of excellence, the university was given the status of a deemed university by University Grants Commission (UGC).

The university is located adjacent to Arts College of Osmania University and it houses approximately 25 buildings. The university comprises of 11 schools which include:

School of English Education

School of Language Sciences

School of English Literary Studies

School of Distance Education

School of Communication Studies

School of Inter-disciplinary Studies

School of Middle-east and African Studies

School of Asian Studies

School of Germanic Studies

School of Romance Studies and

School of Russian Studies

The university has four hostels, both for men and women, for the regular students. Rooms are allotted on sharing basis. There is a well furnished AC international Guest House for the participants of International Training Programmes. The university also provides indoor and outdoor recreational facilities for the students. The university has a Film Club which organizes regular screening of world class English as well as foreign language movies in addition to the University Theatre Club for the students who are interested in acting. There is also an Alumni Association, Anti-ragging Committee. The university also has an Educational Multi-media Research Centre.

Currently, Prof.Sunaina Singh is the Vice Chancellor of the university and Prof. P.Madhavan is the in-charge Registrar.
