The Central University of South Bihar is the original Central University of Bihar. This university is an establishment recognised under the newly established Central Universities by the Government of India under the Central Universities Act of 2009. For now, the university offices are located at the Birla Institute of Technology Campus, PO BV College Patna - 800014.
While it is not yet confirmed, the university will be relocated to Panchanpur 10 kilometers rom Gaya on Defence land. The university will be located on 300 acre campus.

The Central University of Bihar emerged through the various demands since 2009. The university first offered post graduate courses in social sciences and policy by launching Master of Arts in Develoipment studies for 2009 - 10. Then Masters programmes in Biotechnology Computer science, Environmental science, Mathematics and Statics were launched. Further courses for masters programmes were added in the fields of Bio informatics, Communications and Media Studies, Psychology, Life Science, Economics, English, Hindi, Political Science and International Relations, Sociology and a M. Tech course in Computer Science. The first convocation by the university was held on 26/09/2013.

As the state of Bihar is vast, the Central University of South Bihar will have its jurisdiction limited to the south of River Ganges in the State of Bihar.

Admissions for the university happen through the Central Universities Common Entrance TEST (CUCET). For certain admissions, CUCET can be accompanied with Interviews and Group Discussions.
