Nalanda University is located in the District of Nalanda of the state of Bihar. The nearest road highway to access the university is State Highway No. 71 and the location is on the southwest outskirts of Rajgir. The university is located about 12 kilometres away from the historical site of the ancient Nalanda University and is 110 kilometres away from Patna, capital of Bihar.
The Nalanda University has been a revival of the ancient university which was destroyed 800 years ago. The vision was given by the then President of India, Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. 2006 marked the year of excellent collaboration between the State of Bihar and the Government of India.
The university was established in November 2010. The university is a stand alone international university and is mandated to be an international institution for pursuit of intellectual, philosophical, historical and spiritual studies.

The current schools of this university include the School of Ecology and Environment Studies and the School of Historical Studies.
