The Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya has been set up for the upliftment of the living of the farmers in Chhattisgarh and India. Providing education, research facilities are the major functions of this university.The university was established as a result of bifurcation from the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya situated at Jabalpur. The university came into force on the 20th of January in 1987.

The campus of the university comprises of the "Labhandi farm" which was established by the British in the Queen's regime in 1903. The Labhandi farm kept on expanding as the benefits were clearly visible to the people of Raipur. Operations expanded further to include the Rice Research Station in the 1960s leading to establishment of the Madhya Pradesh Rice Research Institute. It was established under the leadership of Rice scientist, Dr. R.H. Richharia. 1979 saw the upcoming of the National Agriculture Research Project (NARP).

With the formation of the state of Chhattisgarh, the IGKV influences 18 districts and has 3 Agro climatic zones. The university takes care of the poor, illiterate farmers to help them grow, primarily rice and also ensure good quality grain and help the farmers to gain from the same.
