National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal is one of the premier institutes in Mangalore, Karnataka. This institute was founded in 1960 as "Karnataka Regional Engineering College" (KREC) with various graduate programs in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The college was affiliated to the University of Mysore and later affiliation changed to Mangalore University.

In the year 2002, the institute was upgraded to National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK).
