Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) comes under Institutes of National Importance (INI). INI is a status which has been given to India's premier higher education institutes in the public sector by the government. IISER is a premiere science education and research institute in India, in basic sciences.

There are three ways to get admission in IISER. They are,
1. KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna) - Scholarship program funded by Govt. of India's science and technology departments. It is under the control of IISc and gives contingency grants to students till pre-Ph.D level, on the basis of aptitude test (75%) as well as interview (25%). Qualifying students can get admission to IISER and IISc.

2. JEE Advanced - Joint Engineering Entrance Exams Advanced is an annual national level entrance exams for admissions to various engineering colleges in India. General category candidates having JEE Advanced rank within the first 10000 in Common Rank List (CRL), and OBC Non creamy layer, SC/ST as well as PD (persons with disability) candidates having a JEE Advanced rank within 10000 in their respective category list can apply to IISER.

3. SCB channel (State and Central Boards Channel) - Students with marks above the cutoff set by IISER with respect to their board in higher secondary examinations can apply for IISER admissions. For each year, a different cutoff will be set by IISER. After that, students who apply through SCB channel should write a test known as IAT (IISER Aptitude Test); for which the cut-off marks are kept confidential for each IISER. On qualifying IAT, selected students will be allotted to various IISERs bu the Joint Admission Committe (JAC) via a common admission portal.

Admissions to the seven IISERs (Thiruvananthapuram, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Tirupati and Berhampur) have been started for the year 2019. Candidates can apply through https://www.iiseradmission.in/ , registering themselves and submitting the duly filled application forms.
