Indian Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IIPE) is an Institute of National Importance authorised by Govt.of India by an act approved by Parliament in 2014 bifurcating the state of Andhra Pradesh. With its abundant natural resources, AP is one of the rich states in exploration of Oil and Gas, particularly in the Godavari and Krishna basin. Also the major industries like HPCL, Steel Plant, the Ship Building Centre and Thermal Power Plant are located in the Visakhapatnam region and thus the IIPE is ideally located at Visakhapatnam. A 150 acre land near Sabbavaram, a town lying on the seashore was allocated by the Government of AP for its permanent establishment. Till such time its temporary campus is co-located in the premises of the Andhra University College of Engineering , Visakhapatnam. The first academic session was started in 2016-2017 in two branches of Engineering Petroleum Engineering and Chemical Engineering. The infrastructure such as Laboratories, workshops, e-library, wi-fi and hostel facilities are being provided by the University College of Engineering, AU.

Both the courses are of 4 years duration and candidates who completed their XII standard with Maths, Physics and Chemistry are eligible to apply. The selection process would be through the JEE (Advanced) examination meant for admission into IITs, BHU and Indian School Of Mines. - Jagdish Patro
