The institute is an autonomous one funded by the Government of India by its Department of Biology under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The institute has a Deemed University status and is also an Institution of Excellence, as recognised by the Government of India. Though the seeds for the institute were laid way back in the 1960s, it was only on 14 November 1997 as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of India's independence and the birthday of India's erstwhile Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, that the creation of National Brain Research Centre was announced. In December 2003, the institute was finally put to the service of mankind by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the then President of India.
Located on the outskirts of Manesar, NBRC has a very picturesque location. It has a lush green campus at the foothills of the Aravalli Mountain range. The institute is well-connected with Gurgaon city through National Highway 8, which links New Delhi with Jaipur city in Rajasthan.
