Established in 1926 as a college of music by Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, an eminent exponent of Indian music, Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University is the one and only music university in India offering courses exclusively on music. It was declared as a Deemed University in the year 2000 by the Government of India. With excellent faculty, it has produced many great maestros of music and has students from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Central, and East Asian Countries. The Grievance Redressal And Anti-Ragging Cell ensures that grievances are quickly addressed.

Campus infrastructure

The library of Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University has books and other reading material in English as well as regional languages and a unique 'Sound Museum' houses rare recordings and CDs of illustrious artists. Seminars, conferences and workshops are conducted in the 'Sujan Sabhagar', the lecture-cum-demonstration room, while the recording studio maintains records of these. The 'Kalamandapam Sabhagar' is the auditorium where programs are held. The hostel provides accommodation for 60 girls and there is a separate hostel for 15 boys. Only those who are 18 years and above can apply for the hostel facility. Other infrastructure includes a canteen facility.

The Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs. Students who are from low-income families and reserved categories receive support through Freeships and Scholarships that are offered by the State Government.

The admission notification of Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University is generally released in the month of May/June each year, and the academic classes begin in July. Apart from having pre-requisite qualifications, you need to qualify in the admission audition test conducted by the university in order to get admission. It should be noted that you cannot enroll in two Degree or two Diploma programs at the same time. Students seeking admission to the Doctoral programs should apply in the same discipline from which the Postgraduate or equivalent qualification has been acquired and are required to appear for an entrance test.
