This university focuses on the study of yoga, based on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. SVYASA specializes in Yoga Research and Yoga Therapy. Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Sansthana got registered in Nagercoil in the year 1986, and the mother of SVYASA deemed university. SVYASA has two campuses, a communication office Ekanth Bhavan Bangalore and the main campus, at Prashanthi Kutiram, Kulluballu post, Bangalore. It was founded by an Indian mechanical engineer, H. R. Nagendra, a yoga expert and exponent.

SVYASA offers regular as well as distance undergraduate, postgraduate as well as doctoral courses in yoga. There are specialized courses like post graduate diploma in yoga therapy, designed for doctors; and also yoga instructor course (YIC).

SVYASA has its branches in Guwahati and Hyderabad where its regular as well as other yoga based activities are being performed.
