Named after the renowned Tamil poet P. Sundaram Pillai, who is the author of famous Tamil drama 'Manonmaniam', Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) was branched out of Madurai Kamaraj University in 1990. MSU was formed to cater the higher education needs of people from Tamil Nadu's southern districts, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari. The university is located at Tirunelveli.

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University offers certificate, integrated 5year postgraduate, postgraduate, as well as doctoral degrees through its various departments. MSU also has a directorate for distance & continuing education, which offers various courses. This distance education wing offers various undergraduate courses, like B.Ed as well.

This university has an extended PG center at Nagercoil, which offers PG courses in Mathematics and English, in order to serve the need of Kanyakumari district for more teachers in its numerous CBSE/ICSE schools.

The university also has study centers offering PG courses in specialized areas. One is the Center for Marine Sciences & Technology (located at Rajakkamangalam, Kanyakumari district), offering 2year M.Sc in Marine Biotechnology as well as in Microbiology; Another is Sri. Paramakalyani Center for Excellence in Environmental Sciences (located at Alwarkurichi) offering 2year M.Sc in Environmental Sciences as well as in Nano Science.

Admission details at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, 2019

5year integrated postgraduate programs are open to candidates who have completed 12th or equivalent and it gives UG degree after 3years and PG degree after 5years. Admission will be based on the marks obtained for 12th or equivalent.

Admission to all other programs like Certificate courses, PG diploma courses, MA, M.Sc, M.Tech (Computer & Information Technology), M.E (Computer Science & Engineering) M.Ed, M.PEd, as well as courses in Library Science, will be based on an entrance test conducted by Manmaniam Sundaranar University itself.

MBA admissions will be based on Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET).
