About the InstituteLocated on the banks of Khadakwasla lake surrounded by Sahyadri hills in Pune, the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology is one of the premier educational centre and training institute for Defence Forces of India . It imparts knowledge in Defence strategic studies to the Scientists of DRDO, officers of Ordnance Factory Board and other services relevant to Defence. It has emerged as an International study centre, particularly for representatives of SAARC countries by conducting short term courses.
First started as an Institute of Armament Studies in 1952 in the CME campus at Pune, it was redesignated as Institute of Armament Technology, (IAT) in 1967. Its role was expanded to train the scientists of DRDO on their initial appointment. Earlier it was affiliated to Pune Univerisity. Now it is recognized as a Deemed University in 1st April 2006 by UGC with activities involving Human Resource Development for the Defence Forces by way of imparting education, research and training on Defence Technology to the officers of Armed Forces, Scientists of the DRDO, Technical officers of the Ordnance Factory Board, Directorate of Quality Assurance, Defence Public Sector Undertakings and friendly foreign countries. It also focuses on result oriented research as required for Defence and national security.
Courses offered The institute offers courses in M Tech programme in various streams like aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation technology, Chemical Technology, Robotics, Computer science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering etc.,. The courses are offered for regular and serving Defence Services Officers. Each programme has an intake of 30 seats andmonthly scholorship of Rs. 12500/- would be given as per UGC norms. A valid GATE score is mandatory for its final selection.
In addition, Ph D programmes in various streams of study for Indian and Foreign nationals are undertaken here and a successful award winner would have a great reputation in his area of study.
How to reachIt is well connected by road, rail and Air. PMT buses at regular intervals are available from Pune Rail station and other bus stations like Shivajinagar complex etc. Nearest Airport is Lohegaon at a distance of 30 K.M
