About the institution Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya came into existence on 7th July 1981 at Puri, the holy land of Lord Jagannath under the steward leadership of great scgolar and former Chief Minister Late J B Patnaik. Very soon it transformed into a premier institute of Sanskrit and vedic learning in India.
It stands at third position in the country next to Sampurnananda Sanskrit University of Benaras and Kameswar Singh Sanskrit University of Darabhanga. About 142 Sanskrit Vidyalayas across the state including 5 Mahavidyalayas and 137 Vidyalayas, Pathasalas were brought under its fold. The courses like Prathama , Madhyama , Upashastri , Shastri and Acharya are available for the promotion of the language under this Vishvavidyalaya. Other courses Sahitya, Vyakaran, Darshan, English, Oriya and History are offered at Graduation and Post Graduation level in these Vidyalayas and Mahavidyalayas under the aegis of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya.
With an aim to revive glorious ancient traditions of Orissa in the field of Sanskrit language, Literature and heritage learning, the Vishvavidyalaya is contributing a lot for the promotion of studies and research in Sanskrit.
Infrastructure and facilities The Vishvavidyalayan extends over one hundred acre spacious area along the beautiful sea beach. It has very good infrastructure with a beautiful building consisting two glorious halls , boarding facilities for students, a guest house , a health centre , a ladies gymnasium, a silver jubilee hall and many others. A well structured auditorium and a sports complex add glory to its infrastructure.
The university Library contains 35000 books, 500 referral journals and 200 manuscripts with an ideal reading room which can be used by more than 300 students at a time. The unique feature is that there is a provision for presentation of palm leaf manuscripts for the benefit of the students and research scholars.
Separate hostels for boys and girls, residential accommodation for the lecturers and staff are also available in the Viswavidyalaya.
How to reach Puri is well connected by road, rail and air. It is located at a distance of 120 K.M from the state capital Bhubaneswar. Busses at regular intervals are available from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Puri by virtue of its religious importance finds a place in Indian rail map and rail connectivity is very much available from every major Rail station in the country. To reach by air, one should drop down at Bhubaneswar which is the nearest Airport and leave for Puri by other conveyance.
