Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) was established in the year 1956 and is operating as a deemed University from 1976. The Gandhigram Rural Institute is administered by the Ministry of the Human Resource Development, Government of India and is also re-accredited with ‘A' grade by NAAC. The Institute strictly follows Gandhian values and helps the students to achieve global standards of excellence in education. The institute contributes more to the rural development through its action oriented and scientific research.
Infrastructure Gandhigram is located in between Sirumalai hills and Kodai hills and so the campus has many Bio-Geo characteristics. The GRI campus has many historic sites and monuments. The campus gives a friendly and a cool look. The campus has a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a bell tower, a pond, an energy park, and a Reverse Osmosis unit. The GRI institute has separate hostels for boys and girls with facilities such as mess, dining facility, indoor games, internet browsing, gym and Cooperative stores. Inside the campus, a guest house is available for the faculty. The campus also has a health center, canteen, bank, day care center and hostels for working women.
Academics GRI offers UG programmes, PG programmes, M.Phil programmes, skill based programmes, Professional courses, diploma courses and Ph.D courses. The professional courses offered in GRI are approved by AICTE, ICAR, UGC and NCTE. The college also offers a 5 year integrated programme on M.A-Development Administration.

Professional Courses: The Institution offers B.Tech- Civil Engineering, M.Tech-Renewable Energy, B.Sc- Agriculture, MCA, B.Ed and M.Ed. In addition, the institute also offers MBA courses on Small Business Management, Cooperative Management, Rural Industries Management and Rural Project Management.
Facilities The Institute has spacious classrooms and well equipped laboratories. Dr. G. Ramachandran library present inside the campus is stocked with lakhs of books on a variety of knowledge. The college library also has a digital access. To meet the ICT needs, a computer center is located inside the campus with campus wide network via National Knowledge network. The Internet browsing center of the institute helps the students to update their knowledge. To train the students to develop e-content, a center for E-Content Development and training with 25 multimedia systems, video editing camera and video editing server is present in the institute. The college also has a museum of constructive programme and Center for nano science and nanotechnology. Each and every department of GRI has well equipped laboratories and research centers.
To help the students to shine in games and sports, the college provides special coaching in sports and it also has facilities for indoor games such as chess, carrom, table tennis and Outdoor games such as basketball, shuttlecock, ball badminton, football, kabaddi, kho-kho, volley ball and 400 m standard track.
