SASTRA was first founded as Shanmuga Engineering College in 1984 at Tirumalaisamudram village in Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu. After it grew in stature and started offering courses from various other streams, it was renamed Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy. In 2001, it was conferred the status of Deemed to be University by the Government of India. The institute is located some 16 km from the temple city of Thanjavur.

As of today, various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes are offered by the university in arts, science, engineering, law, education and management streams. There are in fact, 10 streams and more than 100 courses. In all, there are around 10,000 students and 700 teaching staff.

Infrastructure and facilities

Spread over 232 acres of land, the campus has state-of-the-art facilities at its laboratories, a large library, well-established computer labs, auditorium, separate hostels for boys and girls, guest house and quarters for staff. Apart from these, there is a hospital, bank, ATMs, cafeteria, book store, stationery shops, DG backup, RO drinking water, sewage treatment plants and a bio-gas power generation plant as well. An ATM booth is exclusively provided at the girl's hostel for the benefit of the girl students. There is a post office inside the campus, which is used by the students, staff as well as by people living in nearby villages.

As for sports, the university has playgrounds for outdoor sports like football, cricket and lawn tennis. There is an indoor stadium named ‘Maruti' with facilities for basketball, badminton, table tennis, billiards and carrom. The indoor stadium also has a well-equipped gymnasium as well as a fitness centre. A separate jogging track and a gymnasium are exclusively available for girl students.

With nine hostels for boys and five for girls, the students have the choice to choose the type of room they will like to stay at. But this facility is from the second year onwards. First-year students have to compulsorily stay in a shared room. From the second year, the students can opt for rooms with single accommodation, two-in-one, three-in-one or four-in-one. With or without attached bath options are also available. The hostel charges will depend upon the type of room opted for.

Based on the streams, the university has different admissibility criteria for each one of the courses.

For B.Tech and 5-year integrated M.Tech programmes, there are two ways to seek admission at SASTRA. 70% of the seats are reserved for candidates based on their JEE Main Score and 10+2 marks. 25% weightage is for the JEE Main score and 75% for plus 2 marks. The rest 30% of the seats can be opted for by the candidates, based on their 10+2 marks alone. To bring different examination boards at par, the class 12 marks obtained by the candidates will be normalised. The normalisation will be done based on the percentage of marks obtained by the first rank student from each board.

Candidates with Diploma in Engineering can directly apply for admission to the second year of the respective degree programs.

For admission to the 2-year M.Tech programmes, the candidate's marks in undergraduate will be reckoned. Those with valid GATE scores will be given preference. For admission to MBA, the candidate should have preferably qualified one of the exams amongst CAT/ XAT/ CMAT/ AIMAT or AMCAT.

Admission to law courses is through Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) and 10+2 marks. The weightage is 25% for CLAT and 75% for plus 2 marks.

Admission to general courses like arts, science, commerce, education, etc. will be through 10+2 or qualifying exam marks.

The application forms are generally available by May. The forms can be downloaded online or can be collected in person from the university office. Filled application forms can be submitted online or through post along with a demand draft for remitting the application fee.
