Founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution, Vellore Engineering College was granted University status in 2001 by the Union Ministry of Human Resources. Since then it has been known as the Vellore Institute of Technology(VIT). Located at Velloor in Tamil Nadu, VIT is one of the best research institutes in India offering high-quality education to students not only in basic research but also in the development of innovative technologies. This educational institution actively cooperates with national and international industries and universities for productivity and economic development. This is the number one university in India focusing on research in science, engineering, technology, management, social sciences, and humanities.

Vellore Institute of Technology offers opportunities for financially backward students to pursue engineering courses. For this, a project called 'Support the Advancement of Rural Students' (STARS) has been started. Under the STAR scheme, eligible students will receive a 100% fee waiver on academic and hostel facilities, including basic medical expenses.

Campus infrastructure

The Vellore Institute of Technology campus is spread over 372 acres of land, a notable attraction of which is the state-of-the-art infrastructure it provides to students and teachers. The spacious Anna Auditorium, which has a capacity of 1800 students is a marvel. It is built with centralized air conditioners, Wi-Fi service, a beautiful stage, green rooms, and excellent lighting. Dr. M. Channa Reddy Auditorium, Dr. Ambedkar Auditorium, Kamaraj Auditorium, and a multi-purpose hall are there in this institution for conducting seminars and workshops.

The VIT Group of Institutions has three more campuses besides the Vellore Campus. The other campuses are located at Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh, and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.
