Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is a public technical university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 1959, it is one of the most prestigious academic institutions in India. In 1961, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras was declared an Institute of National Importance. The West German government provided technical, academic and financial support for the establishment of IIT Madras, which was the largest internationally funded educational initiative at that time. Through faculty exchange programs, the Institute keeps close academic relationships with a number of different educational institutions throughout the globe. Many research programs are conducted in cooperation with various universities and institutes in Germany which benefit the students here a lot. The Institute has Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with a number of foreign universities, resulting in cooperative projects and assignments that are advantageous to both parties.

IIT Madras has 16 departments, 14 research centres, and a Continuing Education Programs Centre (CEP). 121 courses in engineering, science, the humanities, and management are offered throughout all of the centres. For student exchange programs, IIT Madras has inked MOUs with a number of overseas universities, wherein students enrolled in the institute's UG, PG, and Dual Degree programs spend a semester abroad to gain international experience. The institute also provides Joint Doctoral Programs (JDPs) in association with 17 universities abroad. The institute also offers a Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) that is supported by AICTE.

The most popular of the 121 courses offered by IIT Madras is the flagship B.Tech. program, for which JEE Advanced scores form one of the eligibility requirements. Online Degree programs are also very popular, with fees ranging from 50k and 1 lakh. The first online degree in data science and programming in India was offered by IIT Madras. The score achieved in the qualifier exam determines admission to the degree program.

Admissions to the above mentioned post graduate programs will be based on GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering), postgraduate admission entrance in India for engineering. It is open to engineering graduates as well as M.Sc holders. Only the top performers with the maximum percentile will be getting admission to IITs. GATE score cards are valid for 2years. Regular, 2 year M.Tech students will be getting a monthly stipend too.

PhD : Offered by all engineering departments, in engineering design, as well as in areas of science like chemistry, physics, mathematics. PhD is also offered in the area of management. Candidates with NET/JRF will be getting PhD admissions, but for those without that will have to undergo a departmental PhD admission test at IIT M.

2 Year M.Sc is offered in the areas of science like Chemistry, Physics, as well as Mathematics. M.Sc admissions are through an all India level admission test called JAM (Joint Admission test for Masters).
