Central Government is proposing to set up the National Board of Education for Medical Sciences

The central government is proposing to set up the National Board of Education for Medical Sciences. This new body will do the accreditation of Medical Colleges and will replace the present authority which is NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council).
It is mentioned that the present NAAC framework is not sufficient to assess the medical colleges as many colleges were found to be having insufficient infrastructure despite having a good NAAC grade.
The new body will assess medical colleges not only based on general terms but would also check the infrastructure and medical facilities so that students taking admission to these medical colleges would not suffer due to those deficiencies.
All the medical colleges in the country would be assessed and accreditated by this new agency. Let us hope that it would bring necessary and desired improvement in medical education.

I think it is a good move. Having a separate accreditation body for the institutes engaged in health sciences teaching and research. Otherwise, there should be a separate wing in NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) for this particular assignment.
The number of medical colleges is increasing even in Private Sector also. Unless otherwise, these colleges maintain standards as per the prescribed norms, the doctors coming out of these institutions may not be able to fare well as doctors and they may play with the lives of the patients.
It is good that this new body will audit all the medical colleges not only in general terms but also audit the infrastructure and other facilities that are required to be maintained in the college. That way, these audits will definitely help the students to maintain the minimum quality that is required for them.

If done in that way, it would really bring about some changes in the quality of medical education. If we go by the present trend, we can see how the number of medical colleges have risen both from Government Colleges and the Private Ones. Hence without a proper supervision, the quality of such colleges will certainly erode and to ensure that proper mechanisms are operating in this area, both the doctors and the institutions will follow the standards as laid down in the national board of education.
The new policy would take care of proper auditing to ensure that both infrastructure and other facilities are maintained in the best possible conditions. Such auditing will certainly help the students to improve their academic careers smoothly.
