JEE Main AIR 400 and JEE Advanced AIR 1500 - should join IIIT Hyderabad or IIT Hyderabad
Author: Dhruv Post Date: 05 Jul 2023 For engineering aspirants, it has always been a big dilemma to choose the right college and branch. Every student is desirous of getting the best college and the best course these days, the computer science branch is in great demand. But then it all depends upon your rank. As long as it is a good one, you are in a position to select the college and course of your choice. The problem happens when your rank is not that good. You then have to juggle between various choices to get a suitable college and course.
I know of a similar such case, where someone from our known circle got a rank of around AIR 480 in JEE Mains and AIR 1550 in JEE Advanced. Now every engineering aspirant's dream is to study at a top IIT and that too computer science. However, to get into an IIT, whatever branch it may be, you have to score well in the JEE Advanced exam. No matter how well you do in the JEE Mains, it is not going to fetch you a seat in the IITs. With a JEE Mains ranking, whether high or low, you can at the most get a seat in any of the NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and so on, but not in the IITs.
So AIR 400 in JEE Mains, even though it looks good, cannot fetch you a seat in IIT Hyderabad, or matter of fact in any of the IITs. JEE Advanced AIR 1500 on the other hand will definitely fetch you a seat in IIT Hyderabad, but you won't get computer science or any related branch with that rank. As far as my knowledge regarding this year's cut-offs is concerned, in the first round, the cut-off for the CSE branch at IIT Hyderabad is AIR 604 for the general category. For Artificial Intelligence, the much-happening sub-branch of computer science these days, it is around 834, for Mathematics & Computing (another popular branch related to CSE), it is around 1100 or so. With AIR 1500 in JEE Advanced, at best, you may get Computational Engineering, a relatively new branch somewhat related to CSE or Electrical Engineering.
Therefore, in case your dream is to study computer science, you will not be able to fulfil it at least at IIT Hyderabad. You will have to look for other newer IITs down the line. If you think, you will take a lower branch at IIT Hyderabad and then opt for branch change and seek CSE at the end of the first semester/year, then you are for a big disappointment, as IIT Hyderabad and in that respect, many IITs these days do not allow for branch change any more.
However, if you can do away with the craving for an IIT tag then you can definitely look for a non-IIT option with your AIR 400 rank in JEE Mains. As a non-IIT option, IIIT Hyderabad is one of the best institutes in India for CSE, almost as good as BITS Pilani or even better. In fact, IIIT Hyderabad compares with the best IITs, in terms of placements for its CSE students. Year after year, students from IIIT Hyderabad are being placed at top IT companies, be it Google, Microsoft, Amazon and so on. AIR 400 rank in JEE Mains is good enough to fetch you a seat in this famed institute. The cut-off generally goes up to AIR 1000 or so. Its NIRF ranking may not be that good compared to the IITs, but that is because, unlike the IITs, it does not offer any other courses other than CSE and Electronics & Communication. NIRF ranking should not matter while seeking admission at IIIT Hyderabad. Year after year the institute has been seeing 100% placements for its CSE students and that too with an average package in excess of 30 lakh per annum. The coding culture at this institute is also a big plus, as a huge number of students from this institute have been winning various international competitions.
Therefore, with AIR 400 in JEE Mains and AIR 1500 in JEE Advanced, my suggestion would be to opt for IIIT Hyderabad. IIIT Hyderabad, without any doubt, is the best IIIT in the country. As for the person whom I was speaking about, in the first round of JOSSA, he is at best getting the E&C branch in Guwahati. He is not interested in studying at any new IITs, except for IIT Hyderabad. Since at IIT Hyderabad, he is not getting any suitable branch, he is now contemplating studying CSE at IIIT Hyderabad. He is not keen on studying E&C, even though E&C is a relatively good branch and IIT Guwahati is one of the top seven IITs in India.
Author: Sheo Shankar Jha Post Date: 27 Jun 2023 I would recommend that the aspirants should opt for IIIT Hyderabad if they are given options of choosing either of the institutes as indicated above.
The following are some of the points as to why one should choose IIIT Hyderabad-
1) The main thrust of IIT Hyderabad is to bring about transformation within the industries by delivering research oriented education, promoting innovation and fostering human values within the mindset of aspirants.
2) IIIT Hyderabad nurtures the talents of the students creating an aptitude for research and development right from their induction to undergraduate level.
3) The research centers of the said institute are based around major domain areas such as Agriculture, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science, Data Science Analytics, Machine Learning, Robotics, Software Engineering, Visual Basics, VLSI and Embedded System Technology etc.
4) In terms of emoluments, the students of IIIT Hyderabad enjoy higher perks than those of passing out from IIT Hyderabad with the stream of Computer Science.
5) In terms of NIRF Ranking, IIIT Hyderabad is ahead of IIT Hyderabad. A better NIRF Rank enhances the chances of absorption of the passed out candidates in reputed IT companies.
