Overview
The field of biophysics combines the principles and theories from a variety of sciences namely, physics, chemistry, biology as well as mathematics in the study of living organisms. Biophysics acts as the medium that integrates the study of physical sciences with that of molecular biology. Through the study of biophysics, scientists come to discover innovative techniques in replacing say, conventional sources of energy like coal and petroleum products. Biofuels, biodiesel and bioelectricity are a few important examples in this direction. Biophysicists are also into identifying how the proteins and the enzymes in the living organisms work. MRI techniques, CAT, X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy are some of the medical techniques that have been benefitted with the study of biophysics.
Eligibility and course duration
Bachelors degree in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics or other related fields of study with at least 55% marks in aggregate.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
Even though there aren't many options to study biophysics at the undergraduate level in the country, one can very well go for a postgraduate degree in the subject after graduating in one of the relevant science streams. The courses on biophysics introduces you to techniques that are revolutionizing the way we are studying the biological systems. As mentioned above techniques such as CAT, MRI and PET which stand for Computer Aided Chromatography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Position Emission Tomography respectively, have been instrumental in the rapid advancements that we are making in the field of medical science. Biophysicists are playing a key role in gradually replacing fossil fuels with biofuels and thus working towards saving the environment. The molecular science behind the various biological functions in living organisms, the atoms and their molecular arrangements in DNA, proteins, etc. is what you get to understand through this course.
Career opportunities
The field of biophysics provides for job opportunities in the private and the government sector in areas such as medical science, agriculture, nutrition, environmental science, forensic science, radiation science, biotechnology and many more. There will be openings in medical health centres, medical colleges, hospitals, research institutes and clinics. Depending on your job profile you could be a clinical biophysicist, forensic biophysicist, nutritional biophysicist, researcher and so on. By undergoing a PhD in the field there will be numerous opportunities for undertaking research work in the country and abroad. You can also take up a career in academics in universities and colleges.
